The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the additive vitamin E acetate as the main cause for vaping related pulmonary illness that spread across the nation. In an investigation done by the CDC the substance was found in the lung tissue of 29 patients that suffered vaping related lung injury. The principal deputy director of the CDC, Anne Schuchat informed reporters that "these findings provide direct evidence of vitamin E acetate at the primary site of injury within the lung." This synthetic substance normally found in nutritional supplements and personal care products, when inhaled may cause harm.
When vitamin E acetate is inhaled through the lungs of the body, it coats the lungs, resulting in difficulty breathing and further severe pulmonary illness. In addition to the CDC report, the Cannabis Trade Federation (CTF) has urged cannabis businesses to avoid the use of vitamin E acetate as an additive.

The e-cigarette and vaping products that caused the incidents of illness contained both flavored nicotine or THC. The underlying reason for the reported illnesses and deaths among patients were a result of the discovered vitamin E acetate additive. Following the discovery, officials in states that offer legal medical or recreational marijuana have been urged by the Cannabis Trade Federation (CTF) to make sure that the additive is prohibited in the use of any cannabis product meant to be inhaled.
Officials from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have made it clear in their report that vitamin E acetate is the primary cause of illness and death, but have not ruled out the potential for other causes, as they continue to investigate the cases of vaping deaths. A majority of reported cases of illness were as a result of illicit vaping products. Government and health officials urge against the use of vaping products containing vitamin E acetate and warn against acquiring illicit vaping products.
